IBM Corp’s European boss William Etherington, has been telling Agence France-Presse that Big Blue would not attempt to market its OS/2 system as a consumer product, though it would continue to develop it for companies and business organizations, effectively conceding what the industry had known for ages, that it is giving up its attempt to compete with Microsoft’s Windows 95 operating system. He said that Windows has become the dominant force and IBM would simply have to admit it. OS/2 is reportedly up on is used on 14m computers, compared with 140m Windows-based systems.
