PC-to-Unix communication specialists NetManage Inc claims it is the first to bring to market the latest generation, Internet- enabled version of the X-Windows technology, Broadway (CI No 2,811). Netmanage’s product, Chameleon UnixLink 97, enables X applications to run over Internet protocols as a thin client within a Web browser. The company has also re-engineered its Network File System technology for increased performance. Features include a new user configuration profile function enabling network administrators to create custom installation templates that can be used to automate deployment of Chameleon across a network. It can be used for accessing desktop configurations for making changes to the X server from a remote location, using a Web browser with a standard TCP/IP connection. The enhanced electronic support wizard automates and streamlines communication with the helpdesk for rapid problem resolution. A new Drop-in X server enables users to launch and display Unix clients from within the contents of a Web page via a thin client plug-in. Network installation, configuration, and maintenance are all supported via both local and remote connections. The new Chameleon comes with LBX or X.Fast which employs the Broadway standards-based method of handling data over low bandwidth lines. Chameleon UnixLink 97 costs $400. Broadway was originally developed by the X Consortium, now a part of the Open Group. Beta versions first appeared in October last year (CI No 3,032).
