Apple Computer Inc has finally introduced the subnotebook that it developed with IBM Japan, first announced last November (CI No. 3,040). The PowerBook 2400c becomes, according to Apple, the smallest and lightest – at 4.4 lbs – system running on the Macintosh operating system today. It comes in one configuration that includes a 180MHz 603e PowerPC processor, 256K level 2 cache, 16Mb RAM, a 1.3Gb IDE hard drive, 10.4 active matrix color display and two PC card slots. The 2400c, originally intended for the Japanese market, is expected to be available there by the end of May and, Apple has decided after some debate, in the US by the end of July. The estimated price is $3,500, as previously reported (CI No 3,127).
