Intel Corp chairman Andy Grove has been demonstrating a new utility which claims to tune up the performance of Java on Intel chips. The company’s VTune, version 2.5 performance tuning tool now supports Java, and Intel says it’s the first tool of its kind available. It enables programmers to optimize Java code through a visual interface which highlights the performance bottlenecks. Grove demonstrated the tool at Netscape Communications Corp’s Developer Conference in San Jose last week. It should be available in August. Meanwhile, Sun Microsystems Inc’s much- anticipated HotSpot fast Java compiler technology, acquired with the acquisition of Longview Technologies LLC last February (CI No 3,103), now looks as if it will not be released as a product until next year. A white paper with details of the technology is due in August.
