Tandem Computers Inc has been bragging about how its current ServerNet interconnect can pass some 11,000 messages a second, a latency of 90 microseconds and will supposedly get that down to 50 microseconds before a new cut of ServerNet is ready. Meantime, Tandem rival Dolphin Interconnect Solutions Inc already claims a latency of 15 microseconds, or 65,000 messages a second; and Network Engines Inc – see separate story this section – wouldn’t say how fast its new interconnect is. Tandem says its Compaq Computer Corp parent is not too far away from handing down a plan to develop an integrates line of server offerings. While former CEO Roel Pieper – now a made man over at Compaq as SVP worldwide sales – isn’t being replaced, the company wouldn’t comment on published reports that president Enricho Pesatori’s name is being associated with NCR Corp. Meantime, Tandem says its new two-by-two CS150 Windows NT-based server is a real cluster-in-a-box – or will be once NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition with Cluster Server (Wolfpack) ships – while Data General Corp’s Cluster-in-a-Box offering is more of a cluster-in-a-rack.
