As predicted (CI No 3,289), DCE security software company Dascom Inc has bought the majority of Chisholm Technologies’ DCE management products from the Austin, Texas-based company’s owner, Fujitsu Ltd, for an undisclosed amount. Dascom will integrate the Chisholm network management technology into its IntraVerse security policy suite and the Santa Cruz, California-based company will open a new office in Austin to continue development of Chisholm’s next-generation web- and directory-based Comet network management products and to support its existing customers. Dascom gets all Chisholm’s DCE work and the right to develop and use Comet’s namespace, security and event management and GUI class libraries; it’s taken on half a dozen of Chisholm’s 35-odd employees. Fujitsu retains Comet intellectual property and is not granting Dascom rights to Chisholm’s LDAP management software, said to be of key importance to Fujitsu’s management plans going forward. Dascom’s also plumbing its security architecture with Java, and is to embed a Java virtual machine into its IntraVerse authorization server. There’s a Java-based management console on its way and the NetSeat client is being re- written in Java. Dascom’s licensed DEC’s DCE implementation for Windows NT upon which IntraVerse will run. Dascom says it’ll support whatever security model Microsoft eventually implements in Windows NT 5.0. Redmond’s swapping out NT’s domain-based security system for a more Unix-like model in NT 5.0 which Dascom says may include native implementation of Kerberos or use of a Kerber-ized (sic) SSL secure lockets layer technology.
