UK record retailers such as Tower Records, HMV and Virgin, are all planning to open internet hosted record stores this autumn, but in order to compete with their US alternatives, the firms will need to offer CDs at lower prices than those on offer in their high street stores. Consumers have long noted how much cheaper CDs are in the US compared with the UK, and even taking the postage into account, it can be cheaper for UK customers to order a CD from a US-based internet service than to buy it in the UK.
