Security Dynamics Technologies Inc has become the latest vendor to have its products containing encryption technology approved for export. Its RSA SecurPC 2.0 desktop encryption software, which uses 128-bit long encryption keys – the limit without a license is 56-bits – has been approved because it has a key recovery plan in place that enables US law enforcement officials to recover the keys should it be necessary. The software enables companies to implement self-escrow which is a way of maintaining private keys within an organization, without using a third party but sill enabling emergency access. RSA SecurPC 2.0 is available now for Windows 95. And is backwards compatible with files encrypted with version 1.1, which ran on Windows NT, Windows 3.1 and Macintosh. It costs $60.
