A savage attack on the complacency of the British government and much of the country’s business community to the year 2000 computer problem has come from the man in charge on raising awareness of the issue. Robin Guenier, executive director of Taskforce 2000 – which is backed by the government and industry – said that only 20% of large businesses and 10% of medium-sized firms has made a start on year 2000 compliance. This left 40,000 businesses with six million employees and their possible failure was an unprecedented threat to the economy, he told the Independent. While the government has pledged up to 400m pounds for a London dome to celebrate the Millennium, they have provided Guenier with 250,000 pounds and left him to work at home with his cat.
