Three months after embedding Windows anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes into its flagship patch management system, Shavlik Technologies has simplified the suite with a feature that means a single agent can be used for patch management and antivirus and antispyware.
Announcing the improvements in Shavlik NetChk Protect 7, the company said the new agent is intended to help reduce the management overhead in having to deploy and maintain multiple agents, for much the same purpose.
“Ensuring systems are fully patched and properly configured is effective against most of the known exploits. But when a patch isn’t available, anti-virus plus anti-spyware defenses are needed,” explained Shavlik.
Anti-malware tools from Sunbelt Software have been integrated into its patch management system.
The company operates in the PC lifecycle and endpoint security market segments where it competes largely against Microsoft, but also runs into rivals such as PatchLink, BigFix, LANdesk and Symantec’s Altiris line of products.
