Lucent Technologies Inc is investing $35m in Indonesia’s Nusantara 21 project, a research and development effort which hopes to make Indonesia the technological hub of the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time Lucent plans to set up a branch of its research and development arm Bell Laboratories to work in conjunction with Indonesian state-owned telecommunications company, PT Telekom. The two companies will concentrate on developing intelligent network services, telecommunications management systems and a remote learning program. PT Telekom is planning to install 5m telephone lines in Indonesia by 1999, a program that Lucent is also participating in.
