Fujitsu Ltd and Intel Corp will cooperate to develop servers and other high-performance computers and will jointly market server- related equipment next year, according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Fujitsu’s US subsidiary, HAL Computer Systems Inc, will take the lead in initiating joint development with Intel and other companies by the end of fiscal 1997. The companies will focus on developing semiconductors and chips mounted around Intel microprocessor units. The team will also develop new servers using Fujitsu’s Interconnect technology that links multiple MPUs for improved performance. Fujitsu also plans to market PC servers using the 64-bit Merced processor being developed by Intel and Hewlett-Packard Co, expected to be released in 1999. Fujitsu and Intel have yet to reach a concrete agreement on the plans, but one is expected soon.
