What’s another few months after ten years trying to get to market? Seattle, Washington-based supercomputer company Tera Computer says it has now successfully booted and run its Unix-based operating system on its MTA Multithreaded Architecture prototype computer. The operating system has previously only run in simulation, and chief scientist Burton Smith calls the move one of the most important milestones in the development of the system. However, there are still other major tasks due to be completed, including the networking of multiple processors, before the first system, a quad processor already promised to the University of California at San Diego’s Supercomputer Center, can be shipped later this year.
