Power Computing Corp is digging the knife in and twisting the handle for the last four months in which it is allowed to sell Macintosh compatibles. The Round Rock, Texas-based company is cutting the prices of its Powerbase 240 and PowerCenter Pro Mac OS systems in what amounts to a fire sale. The low-profile PowerBase 240 price tag is to be cut by $300, making a 240MHz PowerPC 603e system with 16Mb RAM, 2Gb hard drive and 12x CD-ROM cost $1,300. The PowerCenter Pro price drops by $100, making a 240MHz 604 system with 32Mb RAM, 2Gb hard drive, and 16x CD ROM priced at $2,500 for the low-profile version, $2,600 for the minitower. Apple has even promised to provide ongoing Mac OS support to Power’s customers, though Power itself will support the hardware. And after December 31, says the company smugly, its new products will be Wintel based.
