Compaq Computer Corp told Reuters that its ambitious Japanese marketing plans for a low-cost PC (CI No 3,243) have been set back by a rare virus that originated from the manufacturing plant. Japanese unit Compaq KK says about 10% of the new The Presario 2210 line shipped to Japan last month were infected with the virus at the plant in Taiwan. Compaq figures only about 20 to 30 of the infected computers – going for about $1,000 each – had reached consumers since going on sale September 12. Since the virus was found in the Japanese-language software, models sold elsewhere have not been found to have the virus, the company said.
