Sun Microsystems Inc is out making a renewed propaganda push on behalf of Open Look. The graphical user interface has now been implemented by third parties for IBM, DEC and Hewlett-Packard Co workstations and Sun will sell the software for $3,000 a shot once it becomes available in 45 days. VAX/VMS and MS-DOS implementations are also available. Sun claimc to have an estimated 175,000 seats fitted with Open Look and a lead in office automation applications such as electronic publishing (25) and financial services (14). The lead Sun claims for Open Look, which the monthly Personal Workstation magazine in its Application Watch column has substantiated for months, has irked the Open Software Foundation with its rival Motif graphical user interface to the point that it is now supplying developers of Motif applications with form letters to send to Personal Workstation so they’ll get counted. Unfortunately for the Foundation, the magazine in its search for real applications discounts foreign programs and software development tools, and persists in ranking Open Look ahead of Motif by a two to one margin.
