Partially liberated from the Armonk shackles, IBM Corp’s AdStar San Jose storage systems business is rushing around making alliances in all directions, and following its unilluminating announcement of a developement effort with solid state storage specialist Zitel Corp (CI No 2,034), AdStar has now teamed up with Ampex Inc to develop subsidiary storage systems designed to find and selectively retrieve massive amounts of data on line: Ampex said its Ampex Systems Corp unit will contribute its helical scan recording technology, which is based on the same technology used in high-performance video applications and common video recorders; IBM alone will market the systems when they are developed, which will have capacity over 60 times greater than current systems, IBM declares.
