Oxford-based Research Machines Plc is launching a range of four network servers which, says the company, comes with all the necessary hardware and software. The diversifying education market specialist says that each machine is configured to run within a particular existing operating system, whether it be Novell Inc’s NetWare, Microsoft Corp’s LAN Manager or Unix. The entry level product is an OS/2-based machine is built around Research Machines’ VX-386. It has 110Mb of hard disk and 16Mb of RAM. There are also 300Mb and 600Mb OS/2 machines, which are based on the company’s VX-486. The OS/2 machines provide links to LAN Manager or NetWare networks as well as to the SQL Server/Sybase relational database. The fourth machine is Unix based and contains an RM SystemBase 80486. It has 600Mb of hard disk and 16Mb of RAM and it uses Ingres Corp’s Ingres relational database system. The servers arrive with a tape drive and VGA monitor, optional features include front end tools for the interface between MS-DOS clients and the SQL Server, plus programming services to develop macros for Excel or Lotus Development Corp 1-2-3. Machine prices range go UKP9,400 to UKP20,000.
