The future of Inmos Ltd’s Richard Rogers-designed semiconductor plant in Newport, South Wales has been secured with the formation of a new company, Newport Wafer Fab Ltd, in which Inmos retains a 30% stake. The other 70% is being taken by QPL International Holdings Ltd of Hong Kong. The new company takes the Duffryn wafer fab and Coed Rhedyn buildings and equipment and personnel necessary to ensure uninterrupted production, and starts life with orders for 1993 for Transputers and Colour Look-Up Tables from Inmos. Some other staff move to Inmos, Bristol but there was no word of numbers laid off. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
