Don’t hold your breath – the thing at present works only at minus 331oC, but Sony Corp says it has successfully tested the world’s first blue laser, the shorter wavelength meaning that in theory, a compact disks could hold over three hours of music hey fellahs, make it a bit less and use some of the extra capacity to put back those frequencies above 20KHz that you cut out; other ideas for the blue laser include flat-panel television with red, yellow and blue laser diodes to create the colours (without burning out the viewer’s eyes?) and multimedia systems; the lasing material is Zinc Magnesium Sulphur Selenide; Sony is working on getting it to lase at room temperature.
