DEC reseller and maintenance company Maindec Computer Systems Ltd of Woobern Green, Buckinghamshire, has established a new division to concentrate on Unix-based software – and plans to broaden its horizons by selling IBM AIX-based hardware and possibly other Unix machines alongside Ultrix-based DECsystems. The new division – called Maindec Open Software – started trading on December 1 last year, and takes over the operations and client base of 14 year-old Systems Optimisation Ltd, previously based in Reading, where it employed 15 people. Systems Optimisation, which specialised in DEC machines running Ingres and Uniface language software and apparently found itself habitually working with Maindec, will now operate within Maindec on turnkey systems using DEC and other Unix hardware suppliers, including IBM. According to Systems Optimisation director Hugh Williams, the company needed the umbrella of a larger company in terms of resources and experience.
