Motorola has launched Passive Optical LAN Workgroup Terminal with 802.3af compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE). The new addition to the Motorola Passive Optical LAN (POL) portfolio, the WT21004 includes PoE ports to directly power local area network (LAN) stationary ethernet devices such as Voice over IP phones and wireless access points.
The Motorola WT21004 is designed to deliver a full range of advanced voice, data and IP video services over a converged all-optical LAN. It is deployed in support of enterprise users and applications and provides line-rate gigabit services at distances of up to 20km from the core switch/router, which reduces the cost, complexity and operational requirements associated with traditional multi-tiered and legacy data networking technologies, the company said.
Motorola claims that its POL offering is a network architecture that extends enterprise LAN functionality via an all-fiber passive optical network directly from the data center to all stationary ethernet end points in the enterprise, eliminating costly interim distribution and local switching.
The company further claims that the product also offers savings in capital expenditures of up to 60% and ongoing operational expenditures of up to 75% over traditional LAN approaches. POL achieves these savings by simplifying the network with a reduction in active components, and creating an architecture that is easy to deploy, manage and maintain.
According to Motorola, its POL reduces the need for dedicated power sources supporting devices requiring 30 or fewer watts through PoE- enabled workgroup terminal and leverages secure data transfer inherent in all-fiber applications, plus physical layer 128 bit AES encryption.
Other benefits include rapid return on investment and total cost of ownership at half as much as copper-based LANs; and environmental responsibility driven by the elimination of energy intensive traditional LAN architecture components, the company added.
