Lotus Development Corp and Microsoft Corp are perceived to be locked in a price war as they solicit personal computer makers to bundle Windows software suites with their new models; in order to gain full advantage of the emerging software distribution channel, the two are offering their Windows programmes to personal computer makers for a mere $50 to $60 a copy – a quarter of their average street price, PC Week reports; this is to the advantage of users, who can receive free software with their computer purchases; the makers in turn can differentiate their products in the midst of their own price war and save their pennies; pricing is so aggressive that packages have been offered at only $20 to $30 each.
