Adobe also plans to offer PCL 5 emulation software, and support for the Intellifont font format as options for its OEM customers to incorporate in future PostScript printers, enabling users to print any document produced in the MS-DOS or Macintosh environments regardless of whether the document uses PostScript or Hewlett-Packard’s PCL 5, or contains Adobe’s Type 1, TrueType or Intellifont fonts. Adobe has previously offered PCL 4 and HPGL emulation for inclusion in PostScript printers. Intellifont is the outline type format supported in PCL 5. Adobe’s PCL 5 emulation software uses resident Type 1 font derivatives that have the same metrics as the Intellifont originals. The interpreter will also accept Intellifont typefaces installed by end users.
