Middlebury, Connecticut headquartered General DataComm Industries Inc has announced the V.F28.8 modem, said to operate at the full V.Fast speed of 28.8Kbps, or up to 128Kbps for asynchronous applications, using data compression technology. There are a number of pretenders to the throne, but as far as we are aware this is the first true V.Fast modem to market, said a company spokesman. When the V.Fast standard is finally ratified, General DataComm says that any required upgrade will be provided via a software download option, either from a local personal computer or across a dial-up link. The upgrade will be free of charge, and is literally a six-minute job says a company spokesman. The modem is ready to ship now, pending it getting the nod from the British Approvals Board for Telecommunications, says the company, and will retail for UKP1,000 plus tax.
