Motorola Inc’s Microprocessor and Memory Technologies Group has unveiled the 68F333, which it claims is the first microcontroller to integrate non-volatile flash Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory – EEPROM – on chip. Designed for high-performance 32-bit applications updates to electronic modules can be made by simply re-programming the software in-system, on-board or even from a remote site, rather than replacing the entire module. BMW of Munich, Germany, has announced plans to use the new microcontroller in its next-generation four cylinder series automobiles. The 68F333 offers 64Kb flash EEPROM, 512 bytes of standby RAM and 3.5Kb of general standby RAM. It will be available in sample quantities in the second quarter 1992, priced at $200 in a 160-pin package.
