Data General Corp duly launched its new generation 88110-based AViiON open system servers yesterday (CI No 2,193), characterising the launch as its entry into the mainframe markets, where Hewlett-Packard Co has been making hay over the past 18 months: despite any fillip from the new machines, the company told Reuter it could not predict when total revenues for the company would rise, given their current flat to down trend, due primarily to weakness in Europe; turnover has also been down due to falling sales with its Eclipse proprietary line – the key to future success is for new products such as its AViiON line to offset older products such as the Eclipse minis – they have not yet done so, But at the rate it is going it soon will, it said.
