Telebit Corp, Sunnyvale, California, best known as a modem manufacturer, has announced the formation of a strategic alliance with Cubix Corp, Carson City, Nevada, enabling the companies to provide what they describe as the most comprehensive dial-in dial-out system available for local area networks. The two companies have come together to combine Telebit’s ACS Asynchronous Communications Server, a low-cost method of sharing high-speed modems and host communications ports, with the Cubix LCS Local are network CentralStation, which is designed to provide processing power for dial-in users that require access to personal computer local network resources. This combination creates a system that provides management of dial-in dial-out services to the network while providing the processors and modems for the users, the partners say. Conveniently housed in a single space saving enclosure, the CentralStation-Server system features what the two companies reckon is the industry’s highest data speed per port at 57.6Kbps and supports up to 16 ports per server, with up to 13 ports that can be routed to dedicated Cubix processors. In addition, the system handles dynamic port allocation which does not require dedicated modems for dial-in access, thereby enabling additional access to those resources by more users for both dial-in and dial-out applications. The system is compatible with all NetWare and NetBIOS environments and supports a variety of application interfaces including Telebit PAI, Novell Inc NASI, and IBM Corp Interrupt 14. Equipped with a 20MHz 80386SX based processor and VGA adaptor, each CPU is capable of executing the most advanced programs currently available at the highest data transmission speeds. The system also supports both rack-mount and stand-alone modems, providing, the partners say, a flexible design that is able to grow in conjunction with a user’s communication requirements. System prices depend on the configuration selected – but it doesn’t sound as if it comes cheap. Local area network licence agreements are included for both Crosstalk Mark 4 and PcAnywhere IV/LAN.
