IBM Corp is particularly proud of its advanced speech recognition personal computing system, which it is showing off at Comdex this week. The system can be totally operated by spoken commands, eliminating the need for mucking about with rodents or using the keyboard. The company says its researchers took six months to extend the concept from a client-server system – as shown at the last Comdex event – to a personal computer. The system has a 20,000-word vocabulary and can take dictation at 70 words per minute with 97% accuracy, once it has been trained to a user’s pronunciation.
