In addition to the breakthrough deal with MCI Communications Corp for its videophone (CI No 2,014), GEC Plc’s GEC Marconi says it has orders for the phones from six other phone companies in Europe and Asia, but won’t name name until the customers give the go-ahead – British Telecommunications Plc says that talks are going on with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp so that is presumably one: MCI highlights the capability of the phone to synchronises speech and video transmission, so that there is no delay between a scene of a person moving his or her lips and the sound of what that person said, and calls the capability a dramatic difference between MCI’s and ATT’s picture phone, in addition to the fact that the MCI phone, to be launched in the US early next year, is half the price of AT&T’s.
