Sony Corp has launched its Bookman multimedia Compact Disk player in the US as the Multimedia CD-ROM Player at $1,000. About the size of a hard-back book and weighing 2 lbs, it has a back-lit flip-up 5 screen and a keyboard, which in turn lifts up to reveal the CD drive underneath; it also has a built-in speaker. It can plug into an audio system and a television set, and the keyboard is used for interacting with the educational and entertainment disk programming – about 60 will be available in November. It is controlled by MS-DOS but is a non-programmable sealed box system. IBM Corp has five disks for it, at $50 each.
