Twitter has acquired a start-up company that makes software to improve security and privacy for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Offerings of Whisper Systems, which was co-founded last year by security experts Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson, include WhisperCore, software that enables full disk encryption as well as management tools for Android phones. Its other products include text encryption, voice encryption, firewall software and encrypted backup.

Twitter said in an emailed statement that the Whisper Systems was joining them starting from Monday.

The Whisper Systems blog said the acquisition would bring the "technology and our expertise into Twitter’s products and services." It added that Whisper Systems software will continue to be available but that during a transition period the company will take the products and services offline.

Twitter did not disclose a price for the deal.
