Bell Atlantic Corp is now offering 16,000 of its managers the opportunity to work from home: 18 months of pilot programmes involving over 100 employees at the Bell Atlantic Network Services Group showed improvements in worker productivity, morale, job satisfaction and personal and family life, and hopes to reduce medical benefit costs, because one medical leave was cut to four days from five weeks thanks to the fact that the worker could work at home while recovering; most participants in the pilot used a second phone line, voice mail at work and a home voice messaging service, electronic mail, call forwarding, call waiting, three-way calling, and network based facsimile services, so the new programme will put a vast array of its phone services into the shop window.
