SONY OUTLINES ITS PLANS TO TAKE NINTENDO, SEGA ON IN VIDEO GAMES MARKET

Sony Corp has established a new company in conjunction with Sony Music Entertainment Japan, for the purpose of developing and marketing new video games systems for use at home. The new games system hardware will be developed by applying on Sony’s years of experience in signal processing, semiconductors and computer technology and will offer a completely new means of moving characters simultaneously with the background. This means hardware providing real-time generation of images and instant communcation of commands. The software for the system will be supplied on CD-ROM, while the hardware is said to incorporate advanced parallel processing in a dedicated CPU as well as an architecture designed for video applications. The whole system will be marketed in Japan from the end of 1994, and overseas during 1995. Sony also plans to license the technology to games developers in Japan and overseas.
