Having decided not to move its Comprehensive Electronic Office to Unix, Data General Corp is away down the road on a completely new AViiON Office Information Systems suite for its AViiON Unix machines, which includes the Microsoft Corp Windows-based AV Object Office; this week it launched AV Object Office 2.0, describing it as a graphical-based departmental office system for locally networked personal computers, which it says is enhanced by the AViiON multi-function servers. AV Object Office 2.0 combines Windows 3.1 and Hewlett-Packard Co’s NewWave 4.0 to provide office services that include electronic mail; integrated incoming and outgoing facsimile capabilities from GammaLink; mailing lists and alias names; folder-based filing; Novell Inc NetWare for AViiON file and print services; network installation and diskless personal computer support; and integrated Windows-based terminal emulation using DynaComm Asynchronous from Futuresoft Engineering Inc for access to server-based databases and applications. There is also remote inbox management for notebook and portable computers. It uses the MHS Gate for AViiON Systems to exchange mail or documents through any electronic mail or office system hat MHS, X.400, SMTP of SoftSwitch Inc’s EMX. AV Object Office 2.0 is packaged by user counts and sold in eight, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 250 user models. Prices range from $3,500 for the eight-user model to $65,500 for the 250-user model; it will be available in October. Separately, Saros Corp, Bellevue, Washington, said it would do a version of its Mezzanine document and data management system for the AViiONs and Data General is to develop the user interface to Saros Mezzanine for workstation and Windows clients as part of the AV Office.
