IBM Corp and Microsoft Corp are so disputatious these days that they want to continue their spat begun on today’s front page over here in the back: Microsoft says that its MSDOS+Windows bundle runs on all PS/2s but only on PS/2s, and claims that Windows 3.1 outperforms OS/2 2.0 on a variety of PS/2 machines in all common desktop scenarios involving applications for Windows and that it is two to five times faster in most cases and up to 25 times faster for some operations; it reckons Windows 3.1 also reduces the disk requirement by two-thirds to about 10Mb from 30Mb for system installation, and supports all popular peripherals in the market, where OS/2 has minimal support for popular peripherals; it also says wearily that if you must have OS/2, the bundle can be installed alongside it; the $150 price goes to the end of the year, after which it is $200; IBM ripostes that the claim on relative speeds doesn’t at all mesh with the data that we have.
