Optimem, an Archive Corp company, has announced its Desktop Library write-once, read-many optical disk library for Sun Microsystems Inc’s Network File System environment: the 5.25 NOS 7650 is said to be the first drive in that factor that wil work with any NFS-compliant host without modification; the device attaches to both thin and thick Ethernet via standard cable connections; the Network Optical Server Controller, built around a Motorola computer which enables the controller to emulate a standard magnetic disk drive, and the data on disks can be accessed by any NFS network user, regardless of the host machine; the subsystem provides 6.5Gb of on-line storage on 10 optical disks, and its footprint is 1.5 square feet; the Mountain View, California company is planning volume shipments later this month.
