Telecom ’91 chunters on in Geneva and the Infonet global network now owned by a string of international phone companies shared a platform on Friday with Siemens AG’s Siemens Stromberg-Carlson (GEC Plc has a bit of that too) to announce the first commercial operation of Siemens’ EWSP line of packet-switches as part of Infonet’s worldwide X25 network: Siemens nodes are now installed and operational at Infonet’s global communication facilities in Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm and seven major US cities and that additional Siemens nodes will be installed at Infonet sites in Amstelveen, Bern, Hong Kong, Madrid, Melbourne, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto and two more US cities over the next few months; they are replacing NCR Comten 3690s and will enable Infonet to offer 56Kbps and 64Kbps service demanded by Virtual Private Network users.
