Data General Corp is still trying to make its mark in the personal computer market and the Westborough, Massachusetts company has now joined the notebook fray with launch of the 80386SX-based Walkabout/320 Notebook Computer as well as cutting prices on many of its Dasher PCs. The Walkabout/320 has 20MHz CPU and it measures 8.5 by 11 by 1.8, weighing in at less than 6 lbs with battery pack. It has 2Mb to 6Mb memory, 40Mb or 60Mb hard disk, internal 1.44Mb 3.5 floppy, RS-232 serial port, parallel interface and interfaces for modem, external numeric keypad, PS/2 mouse connector, and external monitor. The battery runs for three hours. The VGA display is an ultra-slim, 10 diagonal black-on-white triple supertwist LCD with sidelighting; it puts up 640 by 480 pixels in 32 gray scales. MS-DOS 4.01, Battery Watch and LapLink come pre-installed and the thing is $3,700 for 40Mb, $4,000 for 60Mb. The company also cut prices on Dasher personal computers, Novell Inc NetWare servers and peripherals by up to 17%, with the Dasher/386-25k with 4Mb memory and a330Mb disk off 11% at $6,000; the NetWare D/386-k Server II is off 7% at $10,750, and the 330Mb ESDI Winchester 17% to $2,000.
