As it approaches almost a year free from the clutches of AT&T Corp (CI No 3,070), NCR Corp is doing some shopping itself, and has bought financial software developer Dataworks Inc. Financial terms of the cash deal have not been disclosed. NCR has bought the privately held San Antonio, Texas-based Dataworks Inc – not to be confused with the San Diego, California enterprise resource planning software house, Dataworks Corp. NCR wants to expand its imaging and item processing business and will integrate Dataworks products into its business. Dataworks, established in 1988, will retain its current management, all 60 staff and operations, but will become a division of NCR’s Financial Solutions Group, continuing to develop its image, information storage, retrieval and archiving software for the financial market. Dataworks is a former partner of NCR and the larger company has implemented its software and is familiar with the product. The purchase forms the second acquisition made by NCR since its split from AT&T in January, the first being that of Compris Technologies Inc, by NCR’s retail division (CI No 3,215). NCR says it always has its eyes open for possible purchases.
