International Business Machines Corp Microelectronics has licensed 3Com Corp’s 56Kbps x2 modem technology for use in IBMs Digital Signal Processor products. IBM intends its DSPs to be fully interoperable with 3Com modems and remote access servers, which use the x2 technology. IBM seems to be backing 3Com in the standards battle between x2 and Rockwell Semiconductor Systems Inc/Lucent Technologies Inc competing K56Flex standard. IBM’s Global Services division software upgraded it 33.6Kbps modems to the x2 standard in May (CI No 3,171), and this latest move would seem to be further backing of the x2 standard.
