NCR Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc are expected to confirm long- standing rumors that NCR is to take Sun’s Solaris x86 operating system as the basis for its future Unix on Intel operating systems (CI No 3,216), from its massive Teradata-based systems, writes today’s issue of our sister publication, Unigram.X. Faced with the prospect of going to either Hewlett-Packard Co or the Santa Cruz Operation for a 64-bit version of Unix suitable for running on Intel Corp’s forthcoming Merced chip, NCR opted instead to go to SunSoft Inc division for a 64-bit version of Solaris. It will also take a 32-bit Solaris alongside its own MP- RAS Unix version. In return, Sun is expected to put NCR’s Top End online transaction processing monitor software up on Sparc and Intel versions of Solaris. Sun chief executive Scott McNealy and Bill Eisenman, senior vice president of NCR’s Computer Systems Group are to hold a press telephone conference today (Monday).
