The consensus of opinion from Tandem Computers Inc’s user group meet last week is that parent Compaq Computer Corp will retain the Mips RISC-based Himalaya systems for at least another five years until Windows NT grows up. The NonStop software will be gradually migrated to NT on Intel during that time. Compaq told the audience it expects to become a $50bn, top three computer company by 2000. It claims a 14.2% share of the PC market but stresses it’s not just PC vendor any longer, claiming a leading server market share and significant workstations and storage businesses.
