NEC Corp says it plans to license Spyglass Inc’s MicroServer embedded web server (CI No 3,226) for use in a new range of office equipment and non-PC devices which it is currently developing. Microserver, currently in its 2.0 incarnation, is designed to web-enable any device with a microprocessor. NEC’s microcomputer software engineering laboratory is in the process of evaluating the Spyglass product to find how best to integrate it into the new range of products. Paul Chapple, product marketing manager for Spyglass, claims MicroServer along with its bundled EasyContent tool will save customers time in bringing web-enabled devices to market. The latest agreement is the third major MicroServer licensing. Copier company Xerox Corp took delivery of the MicroServer 1.0 back in March and is expected to begin shipping the first fruits of its labors early next year, providing Spyglass with a much-needed boost in revenues. The other deal is with a mystery European industrial control company. The loss-making company says it is now aiming for a return to profitability by the end of calendar year 1998.
