In a move to join the distributed computing market, Cincinnati, Ohio-based Cincom Systems Inc has revamped its mainframe Supra database manager to run under Unix and on local area networks. At the same time, Cincom announced that it has had to delay shipments of the new database until March 1993 – it had originally pencilled in October as the release date. The company, troubled by problems of getting the database off the mainframe and running on local area networks and Unix, says that it didn’t expect the modifications to be so extensive. The new look database, called Supra Server, runs under SunOS, HP-UX, Ultrix, and AIX Unixes. Its features include forward and rollback recovery and hot back-up, which enables users to back up the database without shutting it down. Supra Server supports local network protocols from Novell Inc’s NetWare, Microsoft Corp’s LAN Manager, and Banyan Systems Inc’s Vines network operating systems. Supra Server is from $2,000 to $150,000 depending on the operating system under which it is to run.
