Storage area network (SAN) hardware and software vendor Brocade has introduced new features designed to enable service providers to build resilient, cloud-optimised networks and transform their businesses to maximise profitability and infrastructure investment.

The enhancements are part of the new Multi-Service IronWare Software Release 5.3 for the Brocade NetIron family of Internet and metro routers. With these routers service providers are given a migration path from providing basic connectivity services to deliver high-value cloud services, said Brocade.

Brocade said its NetIron 5.3 software release enhances the value of Brocade router products and the Brocade offering includes 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10 GbE density; advanced IPv4/IPv6 capabilities; high-performance routing table scalability; and MPLS and Carrier Ethernet functionality to meet the business challenges of service providers.

The Brocade NetIron family of routers integrates a highly resilient architecture and wire-speed switching/routing with system capacity to collapse network layers.

The company said newly expanded Multi-Chassis Trunking (MCT) now supports MCT for Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) in the Brocade NetIron family of routers to simplfy service provider networks and increasing resiliency for customers moving to 10 GbE-enabled servers.

The LAN/WAN boundary between service providers and their customers are simplified with the Ethernet interface provided by VPLS. Service providers can now simplify VM mobility and enhance network reliability while reducing management complexity, said Brocade.

With the addition of (Provider Backbone Bridging) PBB, as part of the Brocade NetIron 5.3 software release service providers can have network reliability, improved quality of service (QoS) and better scalability in order to deliver additional revenue-generating services with their existing infrastructure.

In addition to PBB and MCT enhancements, other new features help in simplifying the management of service provider networks and these features reduce management complexity and costs to streamline business operations, said the company.

Brocade UK & Ireland SE Manger Simon Pamplin said the new Brocade NetIron 5.3 software release delivers on the four value propositions of the Brocade One strategy: non-stop networking, investment protection, unmatched simplicity and application optimisation,

"Brocade helps service providers transition their metro broadband and core networks to seamlessly meet growing customer demand. Scalable, high-performance Brocade network solutions provide the leading-edge capabilities that help service providers maximise their return on investment as they deliver new revenue-generating cloud services to their customers, " said Pamplin.
