RDI Computer Corp, the San Diego start-up that started life as Research, Development & Innovations Inc, has decided to make its software emulation for Sparc microprocessors of the Apple Computer Inc Macintosh operating environment available as a product for all Sparc-based workstations. It was originally offered only as an option on the company’s battery-powered Brite Lite Sparc-based laptop, built by TriGem Computer Co of South Korea and launched at Comdex Fall in November. RDI says that Softmac 1.0 will give Macintosh users the ability to migrate to Sparc-based systems and carry over their software. It runs under Sun Microsystems’ SunView or Open Windows, and is claimed to function similarily to a Macintosh SE or Classic by emulating the 68000 processor, supporting any Sparc-compatible display, keyboard, mouse, hard disk, floppy disk and CD-ROM drive. No price was given.
