Stung by claims that Microsoft Corp’s FoxPro runs faster than dBase IV, Borland International Inc will start beta testing a version of dBase IV that’s been tuned for speed on 80386 and 80486 machines, PC Week reports: the high-performance dBase release will not be an upgrade, but a separate version for developers that place a premium on speed; to increase performance, Borland has optimised dBase IV’s database operations to use expanded memory more effectively for data searches; the new version of dBase contains a few new language enhancements as well, and should match or beat FoxPro’s speed on most operations; the downside is that it needs up to 4Mb of memory where dBase IV 1.5 requires only 450Kb.
