Sumitomo Electric Corp has decided to transfer its vapour phase axial deposition manufacturing technology for making optical fibre to AT&T Co: the technique was originally developed by Sumitomo jointly with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp and other NTT-tied cable manufacturers, including Furukawa Electric Co; the manufacturing technique is faster and costs less than the MCVD technique currently used by AT&T, which will pay a fixed fee for the technology and says that it will start using it by 1994 at its subsidiary Network Cable Systems in Atlanta, Georgia.
