AT&T Co has won itself a dominant position as supplier of new telephone systems for the states that made up the former Soviet Union: the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications in Kazakhstan has followed Ukraine, Armenia and Russia in calling in Ma Bell, and has committed to installation of 1m new lines over 10 years, bringing the total – for a land area larger than Western Europe – to 3m lines; payment for the telephone equipment is likely to have to be in natural resources.
